From financing to managing to planting to delivery of the highest quality wine grapes, our goal is to give our winery clients what they want and make their lives a little bit easier. Most people outside of the wine industry do not realize that wineries buy the majority of their wine grapes from independent growers such as Scheid Vineyards. There is a very good reason for this. The production of wine is a highly capital intensive business. First, you must acquire the land and plant the vines. Planting a vineyard costs roughly $15,000 per acre, not including the cost of the land. Land costs have been increasing quite dramatically the past few years and, depending upon the actual location, can range from $5,000 to $100,000 per acre. After planting the vineyard, you must tend and train the vines and wait about three to four years before you get any significant production. It actually takes about five or six years before you begin approaching full production. That's a lot of time for your capital to be tied up. What happens next? Well, the grapes are crushed into wine, bottled and, depending on the variety and quality, aged anywhere from six months to three years before being released to the public. Every step from vineyard to bottle adds another layer of capital investment which will not be recouped until the wine is actually sold. Is it any wonder that wineries need independent growers to shoulder some of the capital investment? That is where we come in.
