"Peace through wine, one glass at a time." Page Mill Winery is a family owned and operated winery dedicated to producing a small quantity of very high quality wine. The winery is located under the Stark's home on Page Mill Road. Ome and Dick Stark founded the winery in 1976 when they excavated a large cellar under their home. They were joined by their youngest son, Dane, in 1992. Production has been kept under 3000 cases in order to maintain complete control over quality. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Merlot are produced from grapes purchased from some of California's highest quality vineyards. Each vineyard has dedicated a portion of the vineyard to Page Mill so that the grapes come from the same vines each year. Dane makes the decision as to when to pick and personally supervises each harvest. He trucks the grapes in small lug boxes so that the grapes are completely whole when crushed at the winery. Chardonnay grapes come from five sources: neighborhood vineyards include the Garbett vineyard, the Campi vineyard, and the Arey vineyard, as well as Bien Nacido vineyard in Santa Barbara county to the south and the Stuhlmuller vineyard in the Alexander Valley to the north. Sauvignon Blanc comes from French Camp vineyard near Paso Robles. Cabernet Sauvignon comes the Fortuna vineyard in the Napa Valley just north of the Oakville Crossroad. Zinfandel comes from Rachael Balyeat's vineyard in lower Chiles Valley where the top 15 rows are carefully thinned for low yield. Pinot Noir was first made at Page Mill in 1985 from Bien Nacido vineyard in Santa Maria. The cool ocean-influenced climate is perfect for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Starks are allowed to harvest the three clones of Pinot Noir in their preferred ratio from adjacent rows. The newest addition to our list of quality vineyards is the O'Shaughnessy vineyard on the Rutherford Bench in Napa. This beautiful vineyard is dedicated to Merlot and, oh, what a merlot. The 1994 was our first release from this vineyard. Page Mill wines are designed to complement and enhance the pleasures of a fine meal. It is the Stark's hope that their customers enjoy Page Mill's carefully hand-crafted wines in moderation in order to fully appreciate the complex flavors and aromas.
